Why Is Recycling Important Environmental Sciences Essay
Recycling is a procedure where waste or used merchandises are reproduced into new merchandises. A merchandise which has served its ain intent will be discarded, and recycling is an attempt to widen the usage life of a merchandise, therefore conveying a batch of benefits to humanity and the female parent Earth. Most points around us are reclaimable, although there are specific techniques used to recycle different stuff, including metal, plastic and paper. The full procedure of recycling involves 3 basic stairss. The used stuff has to be collected, and so sorted harmonizing to its stuff. The 2nd measure involves bring forthing useable goods from the sorted points. After the goods were produced, the last measure requires selling of the reproduced goods to the general mass, consumers or a specific market. As the reproduced goods are sold and reused, the full procedure of recycling is complete and will do manner for another rhythm to come. Why is recycling of import?Recycling helps continue the environment in add-on to supplying more useable objects to people without the demand for excess resources. Its importance can be seen in multiple ways. Below are the grounds in which recycling can be good: Recycling Saves the Earth Recycling a stuff can assist continue the environment. For illustration, recycling the paper can ensue in paper production without extra tree falling. By recycling more paper and selling it to consumer, more documents can be used without farther damaging the forest than its current rate of tree falling. Recycling Saves Energy Recycling a stuff takes less energy than to bring forth an point from virgin stuffs. For illustration, an aluminium merchandise uses both the aluminium and the immense sum of energy to bring forth it from natural ore. Therefore by recycling an point made of aluminium, we can recycle the metal once more and besides salvage on the immense energy which helps continue the environment. Recycling Helps Mitigate Global Warming and Reduce Pollution One of the biggest benefits of recycling is salvaging energy. Energy salvaging consequences in less emanation of C or nursery gases which are a byproduct created by energy production, which are damaging and harmful to the environment if released to the ambiance. Recycling Reduces Waste Products in Landfills Waste which are non recycled normally ends up in the landfill. It is here that the waste are left to decompose or decomposed, and this may take many old ages of even coevalss to to the full break up. More and more waste are being sent to the landfills, and if recycling does non take topographic point, the landfill may be right behind our places in the hereafter. Recycling Helps you Save Money Recycled merchandises normally cost less. Using bing stuff and a batch less energy, recycled merchandise can be sold for a fraction of the same point created utilizing virgin stuffs. Apart from that, selling waste for recycling intents converts refuse into utile hard currency. Recycling can besides be done at place, and taught to the kids as a good wont to be nurtured. Biodegradable waste can be used as fertiliser for workss. Creativity goes a long manner in salvaging money and salvaging the planet Earth. Recycling becomes progressively of import in a universe where the population is dining. More and more merchandises are being churned out to consumers. If these merchandises are non recycled at the terminal of the merchandise life, it will take coevalss to interrupt down or break up.Applications of Recycled MaterialsApplication of Recycled GlassMan has found ways to recycle glass. This in fact, is extremely recommended and good to the fabrication line as it is easier to bring forth and be less. Crushed glass known as cullets, thaws easier and faster and cost less than the natural stuffs used to bring forth glass. This pattern is endorsed by the US Environmental Protection Agency as a better and greenish manner to bring forth glass. Common Non-container Uses Harmonizing to Glass Packaging Institute, recycled spectacless are best to be used for its initial intent before it was being sent for recycled. For illustration, glass bottles are best recycled to be made into glass bottles, and those which does non measure up in the container fabrication criterions can be channeled to other uses such as fibreglass. ( See References 2 ) Aggregate Materials Recognize it or non, we ââ¬Ëre driving over glass every twenty-four hours in our lives. Parking tonss and concrete paving has grounded glass composing. Grounded glass as an effectual base stuff enhances the public presentation of the crushed rock in the mix, and sometimes is independent of other stuffs when used as a base. Glass-phalt is a stuff applied to doing roads, including airdrome tracks and main roads, doing the surface to hold higher clash coefficient, less slippy and less likely to check. Glass-phalt is made of recycled glass. Recycled glass is besides used to do glass beads, which in bend is used to do brooding pigment on the route. Abrasive Media Harmonizing to the Clean Washington Center, the use of recycled glass as scratchy media is known as ââ¬Å" basal burden market â⬠. It is verified that recycled glass has equal or better quality than traditionally used scratchy media, such as aluminium oxide or walnut shell. This makes recycled glass extremely competent in the surface readying of fabricating equipment constituents and even ships. Furthermore, less recycled glass is required to bring forth the same occupation when compared with use of traditional mineral. Furthermore, glass has the advantage of being non-detrimental to wellness with no silicon oxide exposure dust. Landscaping Green-scaping is a term used for landscape merchandises which are manufactured utilizing recycled glass. Glass does non absorb wet unlike its wooden opposite number, therefore bettering H2O bringing. It besides comes in assorted colourss to take from. Manufacturers use crushed porcelain in concrete slab in add-on to the recycled glass to adorn tracts and terracesApplication of Recycled PaperPuting the paper in the recycle bin helps re-create paper from bing resources. This diverts the waste meant for landfills into useable merchandises which uses less energy, H2O and stuff to bring forth. How Much Paper is Recycled? How much paper is really recycled? Research shows that the sum of paper being recycled has reached record degrees. Harmonizing to the Paper Industry Association Council, ââ¬Å" In 2008, 57.4 per centum of the paper consumed in the U.S. was recovered for recycling. This impressive figure peers 340 lbs for each adult male, adult female and kid in America. â⬠Limits on Paper Recycling Documents are limited by the fibre it contains. As paper is recycled each clip, it breaks down into mush. This can be done for a maximal six or seven times. The fibre so will be shortened each clip until it is non useable. Office Grade Paper Office class documents are the highest quality documents in the rhythm of recycling. Its quality and firmness plus its hardy fibres, this type of paper are frequently recycled back into its initial class. However, decoloring is required to reproduce its whiteness. Newspaper Documents used for newspaper are frequently low choice paper, therefore it can non be recycled into better quality paper. As paper can non be upgraded through recycling, the paper used for newspaper are frequently recycled back into its initial use or lesser class Cardboard Cardboard, whether corrugated or pressboard, is made of the lowest quality paper. If it ââ¬Ës of all time recycled, it can be used for packaging. Producing boxes or cartons is ideal, as the colour or brightness dulls overtime as it is recycled, and boxing boxes like cartons seldom considers colour as an of import factor. Tissue Tissue can be a signifier of recycled merchandise. Since strength of paper is non an issue, unserviceable fibres are normally used for bring forthing tissue. Other Uses for Recycled Paper There are many other merchandises that are produced utilizing recycled paper: java filters, nappies, egg cartons, shoe boxes, serviettes or insularity.Application of recycled PlasticRecycled plastic can be used in many applications and merchandises, such as packaging, building or car constituents. Boxing Recycled PET or HDPE is chiefly used in packaging by retail merchants. Household names such as Coca Cola, The Body Shop or M & A ; S normally use recycled plastic in some of their merchandises. Use of recycled plastic helps show a trade name image towards committedness to sustainable resource usage. Construction Recycled plastic is used a batch in building stuffs, such as drainage pipes, ducting or flooring. It is innovated into scaffolding boards or curbstones, where its lastingness and weight has superior benefit to Health and Safety intents. Landscaping Landscaping utilizations recycled plastics to be made into paseos, breakwaters, pontoons, Bridgess, fencings and marks. Durability, low care, vandal opposition, and its opposition to decompose are all cardinal grounds for plastic being used. Textile fibre / vesture Polyester fleece vesture and polyester filling for eiderdowns is often made from recycled PET bottles ( e. g. soft drink and H2O bottles ) . Polyester fibre is the biggest individual market for recycled PET bottles worldwide. Street furniture Street furniture, seating, bins, street marks and plantation owners are often made from plastic. They are cost competitory and immune to hooliganism. Local governments and schools are able to show recycling in action by stipulating recycled merchandises. Bin liners/ garbage pokes Plastic movie from beginnings such as palette wrap, bearer bags, and agricultural movie are made into new movie merchandises such as bin line drives, bearer bags and garbage pokes on a big graduated table.Application of Recycled MetalThe maps of metals like steel, Cu, and aluminium was revealed 1000s of old ages ago. Their belongingss and features of strong, lasting, ductile and high conduction are extremely of import in a broad scope of merchandises today. However, metals are resources of the Earth which has finite measure and non replenish-able. Metallic element sedimentations are non-renewable resources that will run out if it is continued to be mined at the current rate. Therefore, it is extremely of import to recycle metals. Metallic elements can be recycled without losing any their key belongingss. Inefficient recovery of metals from industrial and consumer waste increases the force per unit area on the non-renewable resources of the Earth from which they are extracted. Discarding metal is bad for the environment due to the release of metallic atoms in the ecosystem. Recycling and metal recovery from the waste watercourse is indispensable in continuing valuable resources and the environment. Recycling metals are effectual because they can be recycled for infinite times, doing them highly friendly to the environment. Metallic elements differ from polymer plastics in a manner that the features are maintained irrespective of the physical or chemical signifier, although it might be dearly-won. Aluminum The extraction of aluminium from its ore requires immense sum of energy. To pull out aluminium from aluminum oxide is a complex procedure. Recycling aluminium merely takes about 5 % of the energy used compared to bring forthing it via excavation, and therefore merely releases 5 % of the CO2 emanation. This in add-on decreases the sum of waste being transported to the landfill. A recycled aluminium can salvage adequate energy to run a telecasting set for 3 hours. For illustration, recycling 1kg of aluminium saves up to 6kg of bauxite, 4kg of chemical merchandises and 14 kWh of electricity. Steel Iron is extracted from Fe ore which is common and extremely abundant. Normally found in a combined signifier with O or other elements like sulfur or C. Huge sums of energy required to pull out the Fe from the ore. Over 11 million dozenss of Fe and steel bits are produced every twelvemonth. From this sum 70 % are recovered. Of the staying measure, 60 % is sent to the landfill. Every ton of steel recycled can salvage 1.5 dozenss of Fe ore, 0.5 dozenss of coal, 40 % of the H2O used in production, 75 % of the energy required to pull out steel from the natural stuff, 1.28 dozenss of solid waste, lessening in air pollution emanation of up to 86 % , and decrease of H2O pollution release by 76 % . Recycling Metallic elements / Other Metallic elements to Look Out For Copper, Ni, brass, lead, gold, Ag, etc. can all be recycled. Since these metals are all rather valuable merely a smaller measure is in circulation. The recovery of these metals is sometimes ignored particularly when they are used in families and these points are disposed of by the homeowners.Application of Recycled OilDid you cognize? That used, second-hand oil can be farther re-refined into base stock for lubricating oil? And besides, if you recycle merely 2 gallons of used oil, it is sufficient to bring forth electricity to run the mean family for about 24 hours. Cars, like many transit vehicles, are an indispensable portion of life for many of us. What is done with the used oil, whether to dispose of it or to recycle it plays a important function in equilibrating our desire for convenient transit with our hope for a clean and healthy environment for our kids? We are all familiar with recycling newspapers, aluminium tins, glass and plastic bottles, but many of us are non even cognizant of the attempts carried out by elephantine crude oil industry to advance used motor oil for recycling, for illustration, supplying convenient aggregation sites for the intent of maintaining used motor oil out of our H2O supplies and doing certain that the oil goes back into the recycling rhythm. Curiously plenty, even after it has been drained from an engine, motor oil retains some of its value. The oil collected can be recycled to salvage energy. Many establishments, schools or workss process the used oil for electricity coevals. Some workss even process it to be used for engine oil once more. As consumer, we can direct our used oils for recycling by taking it to the aggregation centre. If our autos are taken to the auto service centre, we can be reasonably certain that the oil will be recycled after they change. Additionally, we can do a difference by recycling the oil from our auto, truck, bike, boat, recreational vehicle or lawnmower. By dropping off our used motor oil today we help forestall pollution and conserve energy for a safer and healthier tomorrow Recycling used motor oil maintain oil out of landfills and ensures that this oil is available for re-use, reconditioning, recycling or re-refining. In fact, the best oil for the interest of environment is the longer permanent oil, doing certain that less oil is generated. Equally much as over 380 million gallons of used oil is recycled every individual twelvemonth harmonizing to the U.S. EPA, which is tantamount to over 50 per centum of all motor oil purchased yearly. Currently, used motor oil can be re-used or recycled in one of the three known ways ââ¬â reconditioning, recycling or re-refining. Re-refining With modern and sophisticated method, refinement can be done with accurate provender and rigorous quality control. Used motor oil can be processed to take any drosss so it can be reused as a base stock for the new lubricating oil. This efficaciously extends the lifetime of the oil, doing it reclaimable for many times without directing it to the landfill. At the present, less than 15 % of used motor oil is refined and the consumer demand for refined used motor oil is low, doing it difficult to prolong for concern. It is of import to observe that the purchased refined used motor oil comply with the oil specifications as set by the vehicle maker. Reconditioning In some industries, oil is filtered or clean in commercial graduated table machine. Although it may non change over the oil back to its premier quality, it can take drosss and cardinal additives can be added to widen its life and maps. Re-Use and Reprocessing Both motor oil and fuels are petroleum merchandise. As lubricator, when the oil has ceased operation, it can be reused to be burned as fuel without the demand for farther intervention. Water and certain atoms may necessitate to be removed earlier before the oil can be burn for electricity coevals. 74 % of all oil recycled in the United States of America is for the intent of fuel burning in turbines, incinerators, power workss, cement kilns and fabrication installations. An extra 11 % of used motor oil is burned in specifically designed industrial infinite warmers. This creates a valuable signifier of energy, which helps our economic system by avoiding the demand to polish new commercial warming oil from imported petroleum oil.Decision

Separation of powers in Malaysia and United Kingdom Essay
Separation of powers in Malaysia and United Kingdom - Essay Example House of Lords mainly consists of minorities of the hereditary peers which mainly are life members appointed by Crown and Archbishops and Bishops of the Church of England. Under the constitutional reforms of 2005, Lords of Appeal in ordinary who have been members of the House of Lords will no longer be entitled to further sit in the Lords. The judiciary includes the judges in the courts of law and those holding judicial offices in tribunals and the magistrates who work in the magistrateââ¬â¢s courts. Senior appointments to the judiciary are appointed by the Crown (Trone 312). The function of the judiciary is to interpret the legislation in line with the intention of the parliament and develop the common law. Under the constitution, the judges are subordinate to parliament and have no right to challenge the legislation of parliament like the validity of Acts of parliament. Judges are barred from vying for elective positions under the House of Commons disqualification act of 1975. T he Constitutional reforms act of 2005 criticized the work of the House of Lords chancellor sine he could appoint the judges and played a central political role in the government. Chancellor presided the House of Lords as the speaker therefore playing a legislative role. The roles were criticized since they contravened the doctrine of separation of powers by concentrating the executive, judiciary and parliamentary functions in one person. In the case of McGonnell V. United Kingdom (2000) the European court of human rights ruled that the right of fair trial was violated by participation of the Deputy Bailiff who was both a member of Court and member of the legislature at the same time. This saw the reformation of the office of the Lord Chancellor (Shar 45). Malaysia The government structure of... The paper tells that under the British constitution, there is no strict separation of powers but there is a system of check and balances which ensure the powers are not abused. In United Kingdom, Judges in the high courts exercise their independence in according to Act of settlement 1700 which protects their tenure in office and guards their independence from executive and legislative influence. The judges enjoy immunity from legal proceedings in their functions even if they make defamatory statements during the court proceedings. In Malaysia, the judges do not exercise their judicial independence since they are appointed by the executive. The right to exercise their judicial powers in delivering the judgments ha s been limited by the constitution. Both countries have two levels of government. The separation of powers is clear in United Kingdom though it may be entrenched in the constitution. The separation of powers ensures each organ of government does not abuse its powers. In Malaysia, there is no separation of powers since executive is more powerful than the other arms of the government. The judicial independence and powers are limited by the constitution in Malaysia. Demonstrating Professional Skepticism - Essay Example Boyle et al. (2015) observe that the failure on the part of the auditors to exercise professional skepticism when conducting the audit of financial statements imposes costs on the shareholders and other stakeholders. When fraud fails to be recognized, the shareholders are the net losers. The article points to the application of professional skepticism in audit engagements as being the solution to the increased number of audit failures and deficiencies. Professional skepticism has become a matter of critical importance to the profession of auditing given the increased complexity of the audit environment (Boyle et al. 5). The article explains that the exercise of professional skepticism by the auditors is in line with the requirements of the Statements on Auditing Standards 1 (SAS1) (Boyle et al. 5). The standard on auditing requires that the auditors must apply due care with an emphasis on the exercise of professional skepticism as part of the auditor responsibilities and functions. T he role of professional skepticism in the consideration of fraud in the audit of financial statements is analyzed with a proper discussion and relation of the elements of skepticism to the audit (Boyle et al. 6). Boyle et al. (2015) explain that professional skepticism is an attitude that involves a critical assessment and analysis of audit evidence and a questioning mind. It is this questioning mindset that enhances the possibilities of recognizing fraud with less attention to experience.

Compare two poetry Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words
Compare two poetry - Essay Example As ââ¬Å"The Snow Manâ⬠opens with lines ââ¬Å"One must have a mind of winter / To regard the frost and the boughs / Of the pine-trees crusted with snowâ⬠, the speaker in the third person viewpoint seemingly expresses personal belief on what snow or winter is about. To him, it is essential to have a ââ¬Ëmind of winterââ¬â¢ so that one perceives more than the feeling of cold. During cold season, our natural tendency is to respond by covering ourselves with thick hides or cloth to be protected from the extremes of low icy temperatures but the poet indicates through the speaker that we ought to recognize the strength born by the pine trees ââ¬Ëcrusted with snowââ¬â¢. Paying regard to the boughs of the trees that remain unbreakable despite the frost summons us to the thought that no matter how intense the degree of coldness is of the snowy winter, a ââ¬Ësnow manââ¬â¢ that becomes of us would know and acknowledge the climateââ¬â¢s heart. So instead of prev enting the snowiness, we would rather be among the pines that hold and keep the wintry sensation of burning cold without putting on fire or any opposite element against it. Through the second stanza which consists of the lines ââ¬Å"And have been cold a long time / To behold the junipers shagged with ice, / The spruces rough in the distant glitterâ⬠, our critical reading is further brought to realize the significance of ââ¬Ëcoldââ¬â¢ in our lives. ââ¬ËColdââ¬â¢ being that which stands for loneliness, suffering, emptiness, or any similar condition of distress is something that can refine a man to a resolute state of well-being having a kind of beauty that radiates in and out. Equivalently, a person who values hardships and perseverance for the sake of establishing a meaningful existence, in the process, walks a path that leads to wonder. The terms ââ¬Ëshaggedââ¬â¢ and ââ¬Ëroughââ¬â¢ may be associated with an unfavorable load or burden yet either the â⠬Ëjunipersââ¬â¢ or the ââ¬Ësprucesââ¬â¢ occur to bear a proud imagery of delight that can sparkle even from a distance. This scenario is quite symbolic of a manner by which an individual takes good pride upon earning dignity and respect made firm via continuous deeds of righteousness and constant struggle to avoid the complacent ways of evil in the world. Good acts may be often unseen but the fruit of pure joy and the absence of guilt are adequate signs of oneââ¬â¢s glowing beauty from within just like the coniferous plants of winter which are altogether a sight of marvel. Stevensââ¬â¢ ââ¬Å"The Snow Manâ⬠proceeds with ââ¬Å"and not to think / Of any misery in the sound of the wind, / In the sound of a few leaves, / Which is the sound of the land / Full of the same wind / That is blowing in the same bare placeâ⬠. To this extent, the speaker likely conveys for us to distinguish between the snow and the sound of the wind under the sunââ¬â¢s heat which i s capable of swaying merely ââ¬Ëfew leavesââ¬â¢ that embody the petty worries of living. It is not quite worth our precious time to be toiling for things of material composition or those that are perishable in nature for we can never count on them to build an inner foundation of courage and reason to work out concerns based on several aspects of life. What the wind causes turns out to be a plain influence of breeze which everyone in our planet can cope with at any rate or level. In reality, for instance, working to achieve a

The Johnsonville Sausage Co Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words
The Johnsonville Sausage Co - Essay Example Johnsonville commits itself to the development of their employees, and in return, expects personal growth and superior performance from them. The company's core values of integrity, commitment, innovation, continuous learning, and teamwork are the foundation that has enabled Johnsonville to manage their tremendous success. These values are clearly demonstrated in the way the business is organized and the employees empowered. The underlying principle that drives the management philosophy of Johnsonville is "to make people better, not to make the business better" (p6). "We do two things here - make sausage and sell it" (p7) is the guiding principle for the structuring of the organization, all functions are divided into two streams, depending upon whether the job they do falls in the "making" or "selling" category. With such a clear vision Johnsonville has found an elegant solution to evolution of a simple and effective business structure. The achievement of competitive success through people involves changing the basic way of how we think about the workforce and the employment relationship. It means achieving success by working with people rather than "getting things done" by people. The answer lies not in defining and limiting the scope of their activities but in allowing them to define their work commitments and targets for themselves, with the organization playing the role of a provider of resources and coaching. It entails seeing the workforce as a source of strategic advantage, not just as a cost to be minimized or avoided. Johnsonville recognized that if it wanted to become a major player, the company had to redefine how it valued and recognized its resources. Instead of raw materials or physical assets, knowledge is now recognized as the major source of wealth and the basis for competitive advantage. But to leverage knowledge assets, we must fundamentally transform the way we organize and use this resource. Those organizations, which can create a team-based structure and culture, become significantly more profitable as a result; Johnsonville is a prime example. Present Issue: At this moment Ralph is faced with a question of whether he should accept the order for private-label sausage manufacture from Palmer Sausage (Palmer). The order represents a sea change in the status of Johnsonville Sausage since it will involve a 25% jump in sales from an obviously profitable venture. However, his concerns as to whether this can be handled in the existing set-up of the company also appear justified. Analysis: One may look at the history of the company's financial performance and success. The question that may be raised is whether this growth rate can be sustained. From details provided, one can see that the production capacity is fully utilized and, except for the seasonal variations, the sales have also reached saturation levels. Seasonal variations are not within the control of the company in any case. Market share growth is also likely to be difficult with the main product of the company, the bratwurst, already enjoying a 46% market share; other products also do not appear to present many opportunities as well. In addition, one finds reference to the beginnings of restlessness among the work force also. Specific reference may be made to the passage on page 12 where some workers are

Nonetheless, it should be noted this practices are never expensive if well followed and executed (Penner, 2004). For instance, the Valley Medical Groupââ¬â¢s medical wastes are only paid for once a year as required by the state medical waste regulations. The financial management of every sound organization usually needs a sound financial management that is mainly pegged on the institutionââ¬â¢s

Prison Gangs Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1750 words
Prison Gangs - Essay Example The violence might be the cause of this gender based bias. Men tend to be more violent in prison than women. The need to join a gang for protection becomes a necessity in a male prison due to the excessive violence. In the end, prison gangs are dictated by race, class, and gender. Gangs emerged on the street during the sixties and seventies. At first gangs were like formed like the Guardian Angels in New York City. Gangs developed out of the Civil Rights Movement ironically. Black Panthers and other minority groups formed gangs to patrol their neighborhoods against corrupt officers that would lynch and kill in the aftermath of the African Americanââ¬â¢s victory of the Civil Rights Movement. White bikers formed clubs (gangs) after returning from the Vietnam War, they wanted to get together drink and forget the war. When the drug trade was introduced in the late seventies and early eighties, gangs became the gun toting, drug dealing and violent criminals that are known today. Despite law enforcements gang unit and suppression measures, gangs are still a major problem across the United States. One problem of trying to suppress gangs is the availability of new recruits. One scholarly paper suggests: Another consequence of suppression efforts is that such efforts may promote substitution effects, whereby the removed gang member is simply replaced by another gang associate or recruit. Still yet, the use of suppression efforts may lead to an over-reliance on these measures and may mask other appropriate but less intensive alternatives to deal with gang members. (Trulson, Marquart, and Kawucha 2008) Gang units arrest gang members, normally resulting in long prison terms. The gang members taken off the street continue to live the gang lifestyle in prison. Thus law enforcement has to have strategies on the streets and behind prison walls. Race is the number one factor in male prison gangs. Gang membership is considered on a race basis. The Aryan

Importance of Understanding Cultural, Ethnic, and Gender Differences Essay Example for Free
Importance of Understanding Cultural, Ethnic, and Gender Differences Essay The United States is and will continue to be a very diverse place. More than 8 million legal immigrants came to the U. S. between 1981 and 1990, and an undetermined number of undocumented immigrants enter the United States each year. In addition, the United States includes people of many religions, languages, economic groups, and other cultural groups. In order to be a successful manager in todayââ¬â¢s very diverse society a manager needs to be open and understanding of cultural differences, different ethnicities, and gender differences among employees. Diversity is the presence of people from a wide range of backgrounds all possessing different traits. Some possible contributors to diversity include but are not limited to differences in age, race, ethnic origin, culture, physical abilities, religion and sexual orientation. As the text book states, ââ¬Ëbringing diverse workers into an organization is seldom a seamless transition. ââ¬â¢ People tend to prejudge and place stereotypes or generalized beliefs that all members of a group possess the same characteristics from different cultures, race, or sex; this must be overcome. To be effective, managers and employees need to recognize, respect, and capitalize on each otherââ¬â¢s differences. By being diverse in its employees, a business has a better opportunity for new ideas and growth potential. As discussed this week in class, when the department head turned down the Jamaican friend for the position, even though he seemed better qualified, it showed stereotyping and prejudices can have a negative effect in the workplace. The situation made for an uncomfortable, even negative environment in the workplace. By the department headââ¬â¢s negative behavior it caused a barrier for productivity and potentially harmed working relationships. It is essential in todayââ¬â¢s business world for managers and professionals to understand the importance of cultural, ethnical and gender differences to make a positive work environment possible. While performing the ball and sock experiment, I was put outside of my comfort zone and was forced to see what it was like in someone elseââ¬â¢s shoes. I found the lefty experiment to be awkward and difficult. I started in the early morning as I was getting ready for work. The seemingly thoughtless tasks that I completed every morning such as showering, brushing my teeth and hair, and eating breakfast now became hard and tedious. I continued the experiment when I returned home from work. Preparing dinner as a lefty was virtually impossible and almost dangerous. Most tasks as a lefty were manageable after some time and practice, but operating a knife was not. I am sure that with a little time and patience these tasks could have become easier to me. I can see how it could be frustrating living as a lefty in a right handed world. This is the same concept as being from a different culture, ethnicity, and gender then those in your workplace. Although the transition into a new company can be difficult, with time and some adjustment it is possible. I can relate the ball in the sock experiment to the importance of understanding cultural, ethnic, and gender differences in the work place because adjusting to something that we are not accustomed to can be challenging. It is important to understand that people we come into contact with everyday come from a background that we may not know much about. It can be difficult to adjust when meeting new people or entering a new work environment. I believe an organizations success can be attributed to its ability to embrace diversity and appreciate the benefits. A workplace who supports diversity can supply an assortment of solutions to problems. A diverse workplace can facilitate a broader service range. It can allow a company to provide their service to those all around the world. I think the most significant benefit to supporting diversity in the workplace is the inspiration it gives to all of its employees to perform to their greatest capacity. Diversity allows employees to come together to accomplish a common goal as a team. Employees will feel comfortable to share their viewpoints and ideas to execute a goal or solve a problem. I believe diversity opens the door for workplaces to achieve higher productivity, result in higher profits, and benefit the community. Diversity may not be something that people are familiar with and may even have a difficult time adjusting to, which is similar to trying to using your opposite hand in daily tasks. I believe understanding diversity will show employees the importance of it in the workplace and how it can enhance the quality of work.

Tim OBrienââ¬â¢s The Things They Carried Paper Essay Example for Free
Tim OBrienââ¬â¢s The Things They Carried Paper Essay Introduction The Things They Carried by Tim OBrien is replete with several themes in the story but this paper will tackle the particular ââ¬Å"thingsâ⬠that Oââ¬â¢Brienââ¬â¢s characters carry, whether literal or figurative. As one reads through the novel, the reader sees the different emotional load that each of the character carries and which become hindrances to the way they behave in battle and even after they go back to their own homes. Theme In particular, this paper looks into the theme of mental luggage that each man brings into the war, whether they are objects or beliefs, which basically hinder them from functioning effectively in battle. III. Charactersââ¬â¢ Burdens and Anxieties à à à à à à à à à à à Starting off with Henry Dobbins, who may be just a minor character who even exhibits a kind and gentle spirit, yet is found to be superstitious as he carries his girlfriendââ¬â¢s pantyhose around his neck. This can be funny as one reads it first, but there is this firm belief on his part that this practice will protect him wherever he goes. The pantyhose, thus, becomes a thing that literally is carried by Dobbins all throughout the novel. à à à à à à à à à à à One main character that ends up tragically because of the emotional burdens that he carries is Norman Bowker. He is portrayed as a quiet soldier, keeping things to himself, aggravated when Kiowa dies, prompting him to return to his hometown aloof and restless. He puts up a front, as if nothing is wrong with him, but this is where he succumbs in the end. His only alternative to unburden himself is when he is able to tell his story, even asking Tim to write his story for him the travails of his life at war. Yet, when the story ends up unsuccessful, Bowker finds no meaning in life at all and eventually kills himself. à à à à à à à à à à à Another character who carries a burden is Jimmy Cross. This time is starts with a mental burden of thinking about Martha, a girl he loves deeply back in New Jersey. Martha does not return this love at all, yet Cross carries this to war and because of the distraction that this entails, he is not able to save a man who died. Thinking that it was because his mind was preoccupied with the thought of Martha, Cross never forgives himself because of this incident and how irresponsible he is to his men. He tries to come to terms with Ted Lavenderââ¬â¢s death and seemed forever burdened with this even if he was no longer fighting in the war. He also literally carries compasses and maps during the war. Effect of Emotional Burdens à à à à à à à à à à à The author demonstrates how silently carrying oneââ¬â¢s burdens like painful memories can hinder one from enjoying life to the fullest. Crossââ¬â¢ character is shown to even suspect that the ââ¬Å"Loveâ⬠signed at the end of Marthaââ¬â¢s letters is just a figure of speech. Lavenderââ¬â¢s death is imprinted in Crossââ¬â¢ mind and heart and this is aggravated again by the fact that Cross discovers that in reality, Martha never really cared for him at all. à à à à à à à à à à à Even Ted Lavender carries his anxieties with him in war as he smokes marijuana and takes tranquilizers. In fact, the men in this war carry their anxieties and fear with them, just repressing them because they are in battle. But the preoccupations of their minds and hearts are sometimes even bigger than the battle at hand. In sum, these soldiers have a difficult time in telling their experiences and the repression of their experiences are carried long after the war has been fought. The tragedies and horrors of the war are carried back to their own homes, leaving them distraught all the more. Conclusion à à à à à à à à à à à Indeed, the story emphasizes the havoc that war brings after they go into battle. These men ââ¬Å"carryâ⬠emotional burdens that continue long after they go back to their own homes after the war. The conflicts in their minds continuously eat away on their victimsââ¬â¢ minds for the rest of their lives. Work Cited OBrien, Tim. The Things They Carried. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1990

Looking At Internet Crimes Against Children Media Essay
Looking At Internet Crimes Against Children Media Essay The internet is a fundamental resource that provides adults and children with opportunities for learning, entertainment and communication. But how hard is it to use the internet? Any child that is old enough to find a letter on a keyboard can access the World Wide Web. New technologies provide number of ways to communicate, and youth of today have mastered those techniques. The world of computers and internet is constantly expanding and changing, and it is not unusual if a child might know more about some software or website than a parent. But, the truth is that a child does not know that one of these technologies might have a negative impact on his/her moral values and behavior. As great of a resource as internet is, sometimes it might be used for illegal activities such as sexual exploitation, harassment, and pornography. The sad thing is that the victims of these activities are mostly children. Thats why in this research paper, I am going to focus on internet crimes against children, measures that should be taken to prevent these crimes, and punishment for those who commit them. Pornography and Children as a Target First of all, how often are children exposed to sexually explicit material on the internet? Unfortunately, any child that has access to the internet may come in contact with sexually explicit material. They do not even have to know the name of the URL of the website to view pornography on the internet. Most of the youth today are familiar with search engines such as google and yahoo, and it is really simple to type in something that might contain sexually explicit words and get at least ten thousand results in return. The study of adolescents ages fourteen to seventeen has been done, and it shows that most of the children came to exposure to pornographic material accidentally or unintentionally. Sometimes they would get e-mails with links to unknown or unfamiliar websites, and out of curiosity they would click on the link, which brought them to a page that contained pornographic material. Some exposures to the pornographic material are intentional and are done mostly by teens in puberty with the purpose of pleasure. So how often do children view pornographic material on the internet? An online survey was carried out which included 500 students, and 72.8 percent reported that they viewed sexually explicit material on the internet before the age of eighteen. Most children that intentionally viewed pornography in on the web in the past are likely to do it again almost every time they get a chance. This happens when parents are not around, and it even happens in random places that have computers and access to the internet such as public schools and libraries. Impact of Online Pornographic Material on Children It influences the moral values and sexual attitudes of youth. It changes the way children think about sex. They start perceiving sex only as pleasure, not thinking about consequences that might arise such as unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. Children that view pornography are more likely to become sexually active earlier that children that do not. One of the ethical issues that arises is questioning if pornography should exist on the web or not, since it obviously has a negative impact on youth. Well, in this case the three of workable ethical theories could be applied to analyze the problem, and decide if having pornographic material on the internet is fair. Lets look at Kantians 2ndFormulation of Categorical Imperative, which states that people should never treat other people as a means to an end. So when a new website is uploaded to the server, people are not forced to view that website. Since no one is forced to do so, it can be said that in this case people are not being used as a means to an end. But, here we are talking about children and youth as victims of being exposed to sexually explicit material on the Web. Well, thats up to the parents to take part and get familiar with activities that their children are doing online. We can also apply Utilitarianism to analyze the issue of pornography on the internet. First of all, we have to consider who benefits and who is being harmed by presence of pornographic material on the Web. Porn industry has great benefits from their websites being available to the people on the internet. For them, it is a way advertising their products and making money as well. There are also a lot of adults who benefit from it because they view it for their pleasure. Children and youth are being harmed by their actions because sexually explicit material influences their moral values and sexual attitudes. In this case its hard to tell if there are more people who benefit then people who are being harmed by presence of pornography on the Web. On the other hand, it is easy to tell that there are greater benefits on pornographic material being on the internet. Utilitarianism does not mean the good of the greatest number, therefore having pornography on the Web is fair. Now lets look at Social Contract Theory, and how it approaches having pornographic material on the internet. Most of the pornography pages now days have their policy listed for users before they can access the page. It has the terms of use, and users have a choice to exit if they have any obligations. At the bottom of any pornography page, there is a warning that urges users to exit the page if they are under the age of eighteen. So this is one of the ways for porn industry to guard themselves against any opposition and illegal activities. Having the warning label, they are following the US law, which gives them legal rights to upload their websites to the server. So according to the Social Contract theory, it is acceptable to have pornography containing material on the internet. Pornography on the internet is not the only issue that arises with easy accessibility to the World Wide Web. Whats more of an issue is that some people are using the Web for sexual exploitation. Online Sexual Exploitation Easy access to the internet has led to increased exposure of children to online sexual exploitation exposure of children to online predators. Most of the children that are victims of online sexual exploitation are under the age of seventeen. A year-long survey has been conducted in 2001, which analyzed 129 Internet-initiated sex crimes. It involved victims age seventeen or younger, and it found that 74 percent of those victims actually met with the predator. What is even more heartbreaking is that 93 percent of those occurred meetings involved sexual contact. Are girls and boys equally exposed to online sexual exploitation? It was assumed that girls are at higher risk and are more likely to fall victims to online sexual exploitation than boys. Well, this turned out to be true confirming that seventy-five percent of victims included in the survey from 2001 were girls. Online Predators Today there are more ways than ever to find a mate, but sometimes search for love can be devastating. When it comes to potential of meeting new mates, nothing compares to the internet. Most of the time, the danger of this modern way of dating can be ignored. There are also situations where people involved in online dating might be in it for love. Well, these people are known to our community as online predators. So where do online predators come from, and is it easy to tell who might be online predator by their physical appearance? Online predators come in different shapes and sizes, and have different expectations from their victims. Social status does not matter when it comes to determining who might a potential online predator. They come from all backgrounds, and are not easily detectable. They might seem like respectable members of the community, which of course can be deceiving to many of us. Who would ever come to thinking that an online predator might be a teacher, fireman, ph ysician, former military personnel or a successful businessman, but the cases of these have been reported. A reality television show To Catch a Predator was featured on NBC, and there was an episode where a high school teacher, caught on hidden cameras, showed up to a meeting, which he thought he arranged with an under aged girl. There was no under aged involved, instead police officer was posing as a thirteen year old. He was caught and trialed thanks to the effort of the police and enough evidence collected by hidden cameras. There was also one case were a former military officer was involved in online sexual exploitation. He was also caught and sentenced to serve time in jail. Most of the time when online predators get caught; they are publically humiliated and sentenced to prison time. The prison time depends on the severity of the case, and it ranges from two to twelve years. Some predators were just placed on probations because they did not make sexual contact with their victims, but did set up the meeting which they never showed up to. They were also ordered to pay a big fine. Bullying and Harassment on the Internet Communication technologies such as social-networking websites like MySpace and Facebook have led to rapid growth of teens harassing their peers. In 2005, a survey was conducted, and it has been found that almost thirty percent of youth have harassed their peers via the internet. Seventeen percent of those have harassed the others multiple number of times. The survey was also done with the purpose to show the incidence of children being bullied on cyberspace. It showed that thirty-two percent of 900 teens under the age of seventeen have been harassed when using MySpace, Facebook or instant messaging. What is heartbreaking is that cyber-bullying may lead to a tragic end sometimes. A 13 year old girl committed suicide after being cyber-bullied by her neighbor who pretended to be a teenage boy. It turned out that he was an adult, and of course he had to pay for his actions. Measures Parents are taking to prevent Their Children from Internet Crimes Although kids feel like they are aware of dangers of using the internet, in reality, they are naive when it comes to online communications. The following are measures that parents should take to prevent their children from becoming a victim. Parents need to become familiar with their childrens online activities. There is software that comes with Windows 7 and Windows Vista, or that can be downloaded for free such as Windows Live Family Safety Setting. Most of the social-networking sites have policies that require users to be thirteen years or older. If a child is not old enough to fulfill that requirement, parents should not let them use it. Some parents educate their kids about the dangers of online chatting, and set certain expectations from their children. Many parents are taking part in becoming familiar with who their kids talk to when they use chat rooms. They are also educating their children to stay in public areas of chat room since many chat rooms allow for one on one commu nication in chat rooms private area. Parents are also encouraged to keep their computers in most common areas of the house so that they can monitor their kids when theyre online. Since there are potential risks of email, many parents are setting up family emails, which their kids can use as well. This is one of the ways to protect their kids from being exposed to pornographic material contained in emails. They also urge their kids not to open any unknown emails reducing the risk of internet related crimes. Some also have passwords to their childrens social networking sites, which enables them to check the messages. There are options which allow parents to use parental controls, and other setting and preferences. Another way of monitoring that same parents use are is spy software. A Spybot by Brickhouse Security was advertised on CNN, which enables parents to monitor everything their children do on the internet. Its easy to install, undetectable, and the kids will never know its there. Internet Crimes against Children and Law Enforcement The expansion of the computers and internet has played a major role in sex crimes being committed against children and youth. The new communication technologies created new challenges for Law Enforcement to come up with new investigation techniques, and handle the crimes done on internet. The federal government has increased funding in the effort to prevent internet related crimes. They created Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force, which supports state and local law enforcement agencies in fight against internet crimes. Internet crimes are divided into three categories. Internet Crimes Against Identified Victims, which involves production of child pornography and other internet related crimes committed against identified victims. Then there Internet Crimes Against Unidentified Victims, which involves undercover law enforcement posing as minors in chat rooms. And the third category of internet crimes deals with offenders who are involved in possession, trade or distribution of Internet Child Pornography not using the internet to sexually exploit identified victims or solicit undercover investigators. Most of the arrests are made against offenders who commit crimes against identified victims. Sixty-seven percent of the arrests involved offenders who possessed child pornography. Eighty-three percent had images of children mostly ages 6 to 12, and 80 percent of those images showed sexual contact between minors and adults. Majority of offenders were non-Hispanic white males over 25 years of age. Eighty-five percent of arrests involved state, local or county law enforcement agencies, 46 percent had agencies operating on federal level. Moral Question Related to Online Predators and Law Enforcement Is it ok for Law Enforcement Agencies to set up traps in which online predators can fall into? According to all three workable ethical theories, it is ok for law enforcement to pose as minors in order to catch a predator. Minors are being used as a means to an end since predators introduce themselves as cute teenage boys. Minors do not benefit from these kinds of actions, and they get to live with the fact that they were sexually abused by an adult. On the other hand, predators get pleasure from these actions. So there is greater bad than good in it. Social Contract Theory approves actions of law enforcement because they are dealing with someone who shows up to the meeting ad forces a minor into something that they do not want to do. As we could see, Internet use has become widespread. Some use with the purpose of sexual exploitation of children and distribution of child pornography, while some use it to harass their peers. These kinds of activities have created concerns among parents, lawmakers, educators and law enforcement agencies. Parents have taken part in educating their children about dangers of internet crimes. Despite all these measures, internet crimes against children are still present, and law enforcement agencies are operating on local, state and federal levels to catch those committing these crimes, and preventing internet related crimes from happening as well.

The Raw Power of A Streetcar Named Desire Essay -- Streetcar Named Des
The Raw Power of A Streetcar Named Desire à à à à à à Tennessee Williams's play A Streetcar Named Desire contains more within it's characters, situations, and story than appears on its surface. As in many of Williams's plays, there is much use of symbolism and interesting characters in order to draw in and involve the audience.à The plot of A Streetcar Named Desire alone does not captivate the audience.à It is Williams's brilliant and intriguing characters that make the reader truly understand the play's meaning.à He also presents a continuous flow of raw, realistic moods and events in the play which keeps the reader fascinated in the realistic fantasy Williams has created in A Streetcar Named Desire.à The symbolism, characters, mood, and events of this play collectively form a captivating, thought-provoking piece of literature. à à à à à à à à A Streetcar Named Desire produces a very strong reaction.à Even at the beginning of the play, the reader is confronted with extremely obvious symbolism in order to express the idea of the play.à Blanche states that she was told "to take a streetcar named Desire, and then to transfer to one called Cemeteries".à One can not simply read over this statement without assuming Williams is trying to say more than is written.à Later in the play, the reader realizes that statement most likely refers to Blanche's arriving at the place and situation she is now in because of her servitude to her own desires and urges.à What really makes A Streetcar Named Desire such an exceptional literary work is the development of interesting, involving characters.à As the play develops, the audience sees that Blanche is less proper and refined than she ... ...st into a reality which is not his own, yet somehow seems familiar. This realistic fantasy Williams creates with his brilliant use of symbolism, intriguing characters, and involving action in the play causes the reader to connect fully with the setting, characters, conflicts, and emotions within. à BIBLIOGRAPHY à Adler, Thomas P.à A Streetcar Named Desire: The Moth and the Lantern. Organizations And Behavior Essay
Introduction Management is an important activity in the performance of an organization.à Management involves integrated activities which together ensue that there is effective planning, control, and organization of recourses to lead the organization to achieve its goals and objectives. This means that managers need to have a wide range of information pertaining to differentà à departments in the organization. In this paper we are going to discus different management perspectives through accomplishment of different tasks.à The paper will look into organization structure can culture, motivation of employees, working with others in teams and groups, and organization leadership and management. Task 1 Comparing organization structure and culture of McDonalds and King George Pizza in Canada The fast food is one of the most competitive industries in the world.à The fast food industry has been recording higher rates of growth in North America including U.S and Canada than any other part of the world. MacDonald is a major player in the North American fast food industry while King George Pizza is one of small fast food establishment in British Columbia. Although the two companies operate in the same industry, there are a lot of similarity and differences in the organization structure and culture. This is based on the difference that comes as result of difference in their operation. McDonald organization structure is based on the size of its operationà à which means that the structure has to adapt to the franchise nature of its operation (Haas and Wotruba 2003, p. 92). On the other hand, King Georges Pizza is a local restaurant operating just one branch in British Columbia. The culture between the two organization is also similar and at the same time with some differences. One of the key successes of MacDonald in the fast food industry has been its strong customer oriented culture. McDonald has adopted a market oriented culture which ensures that the company understands its consumers very well.à On the other hand, King George Pizza has also adopted a market oriented culture but its marketing activities have not been well targeted to the consumers like those of McDonalds. Due to its larger size of operation, MacDonald has adopted a bureaucratic structure that allows for standardization of its operations. The company has adopted tall structure in order to provide for standardization of operations and decision making process. On the hand, King George Pizza has adopted a pre-bureaucratic structure which lacks standardization with management strategies meant to meet the operational needs of the small establishment. The success of McDonalds has been cemented on it culture and organization structure. Since it was established, the company has taken consumer oriented hospitality culture that keeps customers coming for more.à McDonald is one of the companies which use a huge part of their revenues on customer service and advertisement in order to create good relationship with its customers. Apart from the customer oriented culture, the leadership of the company is democratic and ensures inclusion of employees in the decision making process.à The company takes its employees as the most important capital assetà à for its growth.à Therefore McDonald employees are well motivated.à The structure of the organization has ensured standardized operations in all its establishments. Although there is management control from the head office, the franchises are given freedom in decision making process to make decisions which fits their operation (Haas and Wotruba 2003, p. 92). On the other hand, the King George Pizza has adopted an organization culture and structure that fits its operation. Like MacDonald, the company has a strong consumer oriented culture and although it does not have a customer service department, the employees have been well trained on customer service.à This has ensured the continued flow of customer to the small establishment in a competitive fast food market. At the same time, the company has adopted the right structure for its small operations. This structure ensures that there is strong control of the operation of the establishment by the management. Task 2 ââ¬â Approaches to Management and Leadership Management approaches and how they can be implemented Management is one of the most important factions in the organization. Management involves playing key roles of planning and organizing the resources for the organization to lead it to achieve the set goals. Research has documented a correlation between the effectiveness of the management and the overall performance of the organization. There are different approaches to management depending on the kind of organization that one is dealing with (Haas and Wotruba 2003, p. 92).à à à One of the most common approaches to management is the project management.à This approach ahs been used for decades although it has been undergoing several changes in the recent past. Under this approach, the management takes the organization as a project that has specific goals and objectives to achieve. Therefore the guiding principle in the management is the requirements of the project and the fulfillment of the mission needs of the organization. This approach therefore assumes that the organization runs in cycles like a project and in each cycle, there are specific objectives that have to be leading the achievement of the overall goal.à However, this approach isà à more focused on the technical mission or the technical aspects of the projection and various plans of actionà à and milestones to be achieved are the guiding pillars for the organization. Under this approach, the management takes into consideration activities like team building, budgeting, tracking the tasks as assigned to different individuals in the organization, reviewing individual performance, and many others. The success of the project or the organization is based on the way it meets its deliverables on the stipulated time and the set budget. This means that this approach is a bit rigid and set to details. To implement this approach, the management has to understand the goals and objectives of the organization and then formulate the necessary plan that will lead the organization to achieve the set goals and objectives. Another common management approach is the Balanced score card approach. This is a strategic planning and management system which is widely used in business, government, non-profit organization, and in other organizations with an aim of aligning the acclivities of the business with the vision and the overall growth strategy.à This approach is also aimed at improving the internal and external communications and toe monitor the progress in the performance of the organization in light of the set goals. This management approach is also focused on the drivers for the future growth and performance of the organization.à To achieve this, the management prioritizes the projects or initiatives which are likely to assist the organization to achieve these goals.à In order to implement this approach, the management has to view organization from four different perspectives including the learning and growth perspective, the business process perspective, the customer perspective, and financial perspective (Haas and Wotruba 2003, p. 92). Operational change As the U.S economy recede, most companies have been forced to undergo operations changes which are meant to reduce the cost of operation to align with the changing economic condition. The U.S Automotive industry which is on its knees due to threats of bankruptcy has seen a number of players in the industry under various operational changes in order to reduce the cost of operation. With the large burden of meeting the high labor cost, General Motors is one of the companies which as restructured its operation in a number of ways in order to cut its cost. Although the changes have emanated from the economical factors which may be beyond the control of the company, it has result to massive layoff and closing down of its plants in order to reduce the cost of operation. However, this has not gone well with UAW which is the trade union representing automotive workers in the US. The issues for confrontation has been the agreement that were made earlier between the company and the worker and even in the current financial crisis, the UAW has refused to let the deal go. Apparently the company could have retained some of the labor force and lowered the rate of pay per hour. At this time we can say the company is in a crisis. Managing change during a crisis is one of the most difficult tasks for any organization. At the time of crisis the organization needs to have a strong leadership style that does not compromise on the need to bring the organization back to its feet. Therefore authoritative leadership should be used to manage the current restructuring taking place in Ford General Motors. Authoritative leadership would minimize the number of time the management ha s to engage with the employees and the unions since the union has failed to recognize the current financial situation of the company. Task 3 ââ¬â Motivational Theories In the 20th century management, the organizational assets were the most important capital for an organization. However, this has drastically changed in the 21st century and employees have become the most important capital for any organization. A well motivated workforceà à can help an organization to have a competitive edge in the market which other organizations may find difficult to replicate.à à One of the most important factors in human resource management is to ensure the overall satisfaction of the employees.à à The main duty of human resource management is to ensure that employees are represented in the management and their affairs are taken care of. Motivation of the employees is one of the human resource practices that have been shown to increase employee satisfaction and therefore low rate of employee turnover and higher retention. Different organizations have taken different approaches to employee motivation (Weightman 2008, p. 45).à Research has documented thatà à despite the varied methods of employees motivation, monetary incentives remains the most effective.à Employee motivation can be described using behavioral and social approach. According to the behavioral approach, the management needs to have a clear understanding of the employees including the incentives and rewards that are used to motivate employees in the company.à In this case the managers have a duty of identifying the specific behavior that need to be reinforced in employees. These may include outstanding performance of the employee, punctuality, neatness, accuracy in completion of tasks and others. Any employee who shows improvements in these behaviors need to be rewarded to reinforce the development of those positive behaviors. On the other hand, social approaches include the integration of the cognitive and the behavioral aspects.à This theory view motivation as a factor produced by two forces including the expectation of the individual to succeed at work and the need to gain vicarious experience. Once the management recognizes the individual expectations, then they should provide the approach environment that will help the individual employee to achieve these. According the Maslow hierarchy of needs, we have different needs in our life that has to be fulfilled. The Maslow hierarchy therefore assumes that there are those basic needs that have to be met for the employees to the motivated.à The Maslow hierarchy of needs can be used to categorize how employees have different needs that have to be met for them to be motivated (Weightman 2008, p. 45).à .à The Maslow hierarchy theory starts with the basic needs up to social need. At the bottom there is physiological needs, safety, social, esteem, and self actualization a the top This means that it is important to recognize the specific needs of the employee that has to be met first according their hierarchy of needs. According to this theory, there are some basic needs that have to be met and in our life, we struggle to meet these needs. This means that our quest in life is to climb up the Maslow hierarchy to meet these needs.à Therefore if such needs are not satisfied, then individual motivation will arise from to satisfy them.à In line with fulfillment of these needs, a business therefore needs to offer different incentives to the workers in order to fulfill the different need as they progress up the ladder. Another theory of motivation is the two factor theory of Hertzberg.à Also known as hygiene theory,à à it emphasizes more on the factors in the working environment which causes satisfaction and dissatisfaction.à The following table lists the top six factors which cause dissatisfaction and the top six factors causing satisfaction. Factors leading to dissatisfaction Leading to satisfaction Company policy Achievement Supervision Recognition Relationship with the boss Work itself Work conditions Responsibility Salary Advancement Relationship with peers Growth Like Maslow, Hertzberg reasoned that there are different individual needs which can be satisfied by money while there are others which cannot be satisfied by money. He argued that physiological needs or basic needs should be satisfied first while the other physiological needs should be satisfied later (Weightman 2008, p. 45).à . The implications of Hertzberg theory assert that the management should not only meet the hygiene factor to avoid the dissatisfaction of employees but they must also provide other factors which intrinsic to work in order to have satisfied employees. For example IBM, which is one of the most prosperous ICT companies in the world, has taken various strategies including flexible working schedules, pay per performance, and others in order to motivate their employees. The company takes an order from a client and allocates it to the worker who then works closely with the client to ensure that they meet all the technological challenges given by the client. Task 4 ââ¬â Working with others, teamwork, groups and group dynamics Difference between teams and groups In many instances, we tend to use the work group and team interchangeably. However there are many differences between a tem and a group in the real application of the two.à In management we usually stress the importance of team building and not group building. This is because the strength of a team depends on the common purpose and the connectivity of the individual members. On the other hand, the strength of a group come the volume or the willingness to carry out the command given by the leader. In real application, it is very easy to form a group rather than a team. A group can be formedà by individuals of differentà types and background but eventually it will be very difficult to achieve the commonality between the group members.à It is very difficult to build consensus in a group for a leader that it is in a team.à Unlike a group which is simple to form, a team is quite difficult to form. à The members of a team are not selected on the ground of commonality but on the ground of compatibility in differentà à complementary skills. For example a business team can be made up of an accountant, a salesman, secretary, and others.à Every member plays a different role but which are integrated to achieve a common goal. Unlike in a group, there is no room for conflicts in a team. The role of teams in a small and a big organization differs in some aspects although all the teams have the same role of achieving a set goal. However, teams in a small organization may be easier to form and evaluate and their process of work may be simpler due to the size of their operation. On the other hand, teams in a larger organization may take time to form since all members have to be consulted. Their process of work may be a bit difficult since they have a large operation to cover. Application of Tuckman and Jensen team development model Tuckman and Jensen present us with four stages which define group development.à Although the process can be subconscious, the four stages present the process which all groups go through in their formation. The first stage is the forming stage in which the individual behavior is defined by the desire to be accepted by other members of the team (McGrath and Tschan 2004, p. 61).à At this stage, serious issues, feelings, controversy, or conflict are usually avoided.à The individuals get more focused on adapting to their roles and gather information about others. The next stage is storming stage in which the group remains good to the other only when important issues are addressed.à There are minor confrontations which are dealt with or are ignored. These conflicts are related to work or relationship in the group.à The next stage is the norming stage in which the rules of engagement for the group member are established. At this stage, members understands the other well and the experience the efforts and experience of the other. However, individuals at this stage are resistance to change especially from outside for fear of group break up (McGrath and Tschan 2004, p. 61). The last stage is the performing stage which not many groups usually reach this stage.à This stage is characterized by interdependence and flexibility and every group member understand their role and trust each other. The group identity, loyalty and the performance are high as members become task oriented. How communication methods can affect team performance in a large multi national organization. Communication is one of the most important factors for optimum performance of an organization.à The communication process helps the organizations to pass important operation details from one department to the other. The communication structure in an organization is also very important since determines the flow of information from the management to the employees.à Theà à communication structure in an organization should ensure the smooth flow of information between the dyad in the work place. However, communication methods can affect team performance in multinational organizations. In most multinational organizations, the teams may be allocated to a certain function far away from the managements of the organization. This means that the team may be faced with the difficulty of enquiring important details regarding their duties from the management. At the same time, there is a high likelihood that the team will be made up of individuals using different languages. This means that the team will require an interpreter for it to function effectively (McGrath and Tschan 2004, p. 61). While forming teams for multinational organizations, language barrier should be one of the most important factors to consider. Literacy in the Modern World
Literature In the Modern World When exploring what it means to read and write, it is easy to forget how valuable the knowledge of literacy is. People take for granted the fact that our whole world revolves around communication and that our main sources of communication are reading and writing. Whether Iââ¬â¢ve realized it or not, involvement in reading and writing comes into play for all different scenarios. It is used for everyday tasks such as reading directions, writing a grocery list, interpretating an email, or checking Facebook.Through this I have noticed how much reading and writing I actually do. In effect, it plays a huge role in how I communicate with others as well. Since current perceptions on literacy are typically schoolwork related I want to begin to rethink what it actually means to read and write. I want to explore the different types of literacy that have shaped who I am and what perceptions I have of myself when it comes to the knowledge of literacy. Throughout high school I strictly thought of reading and writing as a school related burden.I always viewed it with a narrow mind set because the fun of reading and writing was always overshadowed by the amount of mandatory work I had. Therefore, I typically had a poor attitude and struggled when it came down to writing a paper. Papers such as argumentative, persuasive, and research were just a few of the different kinds I was required to do. When getting started, I always had a tough time coming up with topics sentences and a thesis statement. I generally knew what I wanted to say, but getting it out into words was the hard part.I also had a hard time with transitioning paragraphs and concluding my papers. Reiterating what I had said in my introduction was always difficult. This could be part of the reason writing for school never excited me. It wasnââ¬â¢t until college application time that I found a school related writing type that made me see that writing could be enjoyable. After writi ng essay after essay I noticed how fun this type of creative writing was. I really enjoyed the creativity that was required and how you could use stories and personal examples to get your point across.Creative writing broadened my way of thinking and for the first time ever I was proud of my own writing. Aside from my struggle with school writing, school reading was not as bad. The reading I did was not by choice but I usually ended up appreciating the things I had to read. From Newsweek articles to history books, I always seemed to learn something new. Also by studying different types of literature through English classes I was able to understand different writing styles and appreciate how they relate to different time periods. Some memorable readings that I enjoyed from school were Frankenstein, the Scarlett Letter, Pride and Prejudice, to Kill a Mockingbird and The Great Gatsby. All of theses books were so different and I learned something new from each one. Reading got difficult when it would drag on. Fortunately I always seem to get through them even when the reading is not the most interesting. For example, I had to really focus when reading, ââ¬Å"Creating a world without Povertyâ⬠but after I got through it I appreciated the knowledge I now know and have found it to be really eye opening.I feel that school literacy through its ups and downs has really expanded my critical thinking level. Aside from the school related reading and writing, I find that my attitude towards literacy becomes more positive as the readings get more interesting. Reading and writing for fun is so different because there is no stress and there is no one to grade you on it. I encourage myself and others to read for fun and learn at the same time without all the pressure. Fun reads for me consist of fashion magazines or celebrity news articles. These are what interest me and can be read without all of the pressure.I also like being able to choose what books I would like to rea d. The Twilight series were fun books that I chose on my own and I could sit there and read without worrying about finishing it. My most recent book was called The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which again, I read for my own preference. I also enjoy reading when it comes to communicating though text messages, Facebook, twitter, or Gmail. On these Internet and technology sites I am constantly reading and writing but without stress. Therefore my approach on outside of school literacy is much more positive.Although it can be tedious and time consuming, literacy is important in the world we live in today. After exploring the various types of reading and writing. I have come to find that it is a much larger spectrum than just associating it with school related work. Without it, communication would be almost impossible. I have come to find that I have a lot more experience in reading and writing than I thought. I now, must work harder to hone my skills and become more experienced so that I have a limitless amount of knowledge for the future. My perception of my writing can only improve the more I do.

Native Title Law Reform Australia Essay
Mabo and others v State of Queensland (No.2 (1992) HCA 23, is arguably one of the most famous native title claims in Australian history. This case was the first in Australian history to successfully overturn Terra Nullius and essentially led to the creation of the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth) (ââ¬ËThe Actââ¬â¢). Terra nullius means land belonging to no one or land that has never been subject to sovereignty of any state and is a part of International Law. The majority of Indigenous People view terra nullius in a negative way, as this term had been used as a means for justifying invasion or takeovers of traditional land. The result of terra ââ¬ânullius on ATSI (Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders) meant that they have suffered countless wrong doings and injustice towards them. ATSI were not seen as official Australian citizens according to the law until 1967. This meant the law offered no protection of basic human rights or land rights resulting in large losses of spiritually significant land. The first case to take legal action over land rights was the 1971 Gove land rights case. The Yolngu people took legal action against Nabalco Mining Company in the Northern territory Supreme Court. The Yolngu people claimed that Nabalco Mining were illegally mining on their land (the Gove peninsula) without approval. However a number of set backs were encountered such as terra nullius not allowing for native title and the Doctrine of Reception which effectively outlined that once a country (in this case Britain) has colonized a territory, that countryââ¬â¢s law now automatically applies, overruling any previous laws that were once in place. For the Yolngu people this unfortunately meant that their claim was rejected in 1971 (by Justice Blackburn) as the Australian legal system did not have to abide by Native Yolngu land laws. This caused further cultural divide between the Indigenous customary law and the English legal system. ââ¬Å"Native title is the right of Indigenous people to their traditional land.â⬠(Cambridge Legal Studies, preliminary, pg 98). The English legal system had a very different approach when it came to property rights, Aboriginal Peoples divided land according to the amount of space needed to provide for a large number of people in accordance to how much food there was available in that area, for example clans living near coastal regionsà need far less space to find food than a clan living in the outback as food there is few and far between, this is how land was divided. Were in contrast to the English system we see individual property rights Eddie Mabos lifelong battle for social, human and land rights for the Torres Straight People is an admirable one still remembered today as the first successful claim of Native Title and the first overturning of terra nullius. The Doctrine of reception made the challenge of proving traditional ownership even more difficult unlike past cases such as the 1971 Gove land rights case. Murray Island was different Murray Island had distinct borders; it also had a mythical God called Malo (pronounced Mare). Malo is the source of Meriam heritage and culture. Malo can be seen as a form of Common Native Law. Land ownership, responsibilities; religious beliefs and ritual dances were all covered within Malo law providing the groundwork of an affective case against the state of Queensland. Malo has existed for as long as the Island and its Native People and was therefore a valid piece of evidence in both Mabo cases. Eddie Mabo was able to prove that land was passed down from father to son, generation to generation thanks to Malos law and tribal dances. ââ¬Å"Malo, or Bomai, which is his secret and more sacred name, established the laws which decreed that clans must keep to their own paths, ââ¬Ëswim with their own kindââ¬â¢, sow their lands and conserve the seas. ââ¬â From Malo ââ¬â Bomai topic in Mabo ââ¬â The Native Title Revolution. The affective criterion for achieving justice involves a number of elements each being interdependent of one another and only when used as a whole can are they of any good affect. When assessing the effectiveness of Native Title Law Reform fairness, equality, access and efficiency need to be considered. As fairness has been a large issues of concern for Aboriginal People in the Past, Civil disputes involving Aboriginal land rights certainly begs the questions of who is at fault? When taking legal action for Native Title claims the plaintiff must prove that they owned the land previously and are therefore entitled to claim it. Burden of proof has not been fair in this situation as the Traditional Land was not received lawfully but was taken from underneath them without a leg to stand on. Therefore if this system were to be fair than it should be up to the ownersà of the land to prove they came by the land in agreement with Traditional Indigenous Owners. The second issue is equality. Equality is difficult to achieve as the law can lead to injustice if everyone is treated the same. Disadvantaged people may include, Indigenous and Torres Straight Islanders, young, economically disadvantaged and the elderly, the same may be applied to access. And finally efficiency, efficiency means weighing up the cost of achieving a goal for example financial cost, time, and human resources all add up and if the cost outweighs the result than that in some cases can be seen as a negative result. In conclusion steps to repairing past damage and injustice inflicted upon the Aboriginal And Torres Straight Islander People are progressing yet it is still unbelievably difficult for ATSI people to claim any compensation thanks to large disadvantages in all aspects of the law. Resources are costly and access can be difficult for some people in their situation therefore they are still being put second best in the eyes of the law and Justice has not been achieved for the ATSI people meaning that although Native Title Law Reform is a step in the right direction we still have a very long way to go before true equality is reached. Professional Development Plan Essay
In order to develop a plan that will address the characteristics of my group and me as a leader; a thorough review of the completed DISC assessments much be completed on an individual basis and an overall plan can be derived thereafter. The individual analyses are as follows: Individual Assessments Jeremy Conner, Jessica Mills, and Brian Tuck are all predominately categorized as cautious in style. Their tendencies include: being tense with themselves and others when under pressure, having a natural curiosity about people, being concerned about what people think, feel, and expect, having strong attachments to their personal interests, underestimating the time required to complete tasks, being intuitive and observant about situations and people, associating their self-worth with their work, and being intrigued by concepts, ideas and processes. They are known as the assessors and tend to have strong opinions about people and groups with whom you do not identify or agree. Robert Mills was predominately categorized as interactive in style. This styleââ¬â¢s strengths include: enthusiasm, charm, persuasiveness, and warmth. The cautious style is gifted in people skills and communication skills with individuals as well as groups. They are great influencerââ¬â¢s. They are idea-people and dreamers who excel at getting others excited about their vision. They are optimist with an abundance of charisma. All of these qualities help them influence people and build alliances to accomplish their goals. I was predominately categorized as a dominance style. My primary motivation is accomplishing bigger and better goals according to an internal timetable. I prefer to be involved in my chosen activities from start to finish, and Ià resist people who are obstacles to my achievements. My tendencies include: disliking being told what to do, or when and how to do something, being reluctant to change what I think or how I feel, delegating tasks only if absolutely necessary, acting competitively, especially when pushing myself to new levels or in new directions, making sure that production is completed on schedule, depending on plans for action and follow-up routines, and becoming tenacious and focused when under pressure. Team Development Plan Based on the analysis of the DISC assessments, I would put myself in a leadership role on the team with Robert as my supervisor, and Jeremy, Jessica, and Brian as subordinates. My style is more fit to a leadership role due to my desire to accomplish bigger and better goals. This desire allows me to look bigger picture which must be done from an upper management perspective in order to keep the company ahead of the curve in all aspects of business to avoid pitfalls. Robertââ¬â¢s natural charisma and persuasiveness would make him great at motivating the rest of the team. This does not mean that Jeremy, Jessica, and Bryan arenââ¬â¢t just as important to the team success. All workers from top to bottom are needed for a business to be successful. I strongly believe in the phrase ââ¬Å"you are only as good as your weakest memberâ⬠. For this reason, I would make sure that they were given a chance to air their grievances and make suggestions on changes that should be made. I must make sure to allow every team member to have a say in the business processes because this is a weak point of my particular style. Flexibility on my part must be a focal point to ensure that all team members feel heard and feel like they hold value in the company. Conclusion All of the information in the above plan will be closely monitored and periodic meetings will take place to allow time for all employees to voice their grievances or concerns to ensure that full compliance is being achieved. It is very important that regular monitoring is performed to ensure that the company stays on track and will help ensure the long-term success of the company. Realizing each individualââ¬â¢s style as well as their strengths and weaknesses will allow a more personal and individualizedà approach to be taken in regards to team dynamics and goal attainment.
